I enjoyed talking with Shemaiah Reed on I Am Refocused Radio about career reinvention and why experienced professionals need a different approach to finding their next opportunity.
After 35 years in the volatile worlds of entertainment and technology, I learned that career disruption isn’t unusual. Today, more people are facing the kind of uncertainty that used to seem specific to industries like mine.
When a job ends, the instinct is often to update your résumé and apply to everything that looks like a fit. But applications rarely give people a real sense of what you bring. A better starting point is to get clear about the value you create: the problems you solve, the results you deliver, and what makes your approach distinctive.
Then take that understanding into conversations. Relationships help people see how you think and where you could make a difference. And networking works better when it isn’t just a series of requests. Share useful ideas, make introductions, and stay engaged with the people in your professional community.
We also talked about owning your experience, adapting to change, and staying open to possibilities that may not look exactly like the path you expected.
If you’re in the middle of a career transition, I hope you’ll give our conversation a listen. You may find a useful next step in it.
